Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat. And I’ve got to come up with something for my boys for Christmas. We have a PS3, but I’m wondering if I gain anything by staying in the Sonysphere, or if it makes sense to complement the older PS system with a different flavor. I know this is sort of a Mac vs. PC argument, since they both do pretty much the same thing, but I’d be interested in opinion, particularly on subscription services. We had PlayStation Plus, but I let it lapse since we weren’t taking advantage of it.

Ideally you should wait until the more powerful Xbox comes out late next year but if you need one right now get the PS4 Pro.

Xbox.
Yes Xbox Live does cost $60/year; but you can easily find discounted renewal cards on Amazon all the time.
The larger positive is that MS is moving toward a totally integrated gaming platform. If you also have a Windows 10 PC, they are going to be releasing games that play on both systems. Buy once, play anywhere.
Their free games every month are also quite good.
And Forza Motorsport and Horizon are way better than Gran Turismo.

Most PS4 games are available on PS3, and you get a lot of Virtual Console stuff on PS3 that isn’t on the PS4 yet. I’d wait to get a PS4 when the next Gran Turismo comes out but I’ve already got one.

Since Halo is only on xbox, I’m in that camp. Plus that’s what all my other friends have.

I’ve always had Playstation over Xbox, but I’d recommend an Xbox One over ps4 any day. Better controller, more functional console, and at this point I feel it has better exclusives. Added bonus is it’s one of the few affordable devices that supports HDR. You’ll also get access to exclusives you never previously got to enjoy, such as halo and forza.

I have a PS4 and have always had sony stuff. But with sonys console mod BS and not having a good racing game I’m about to buy an Xbox just for Forza. I’ll still keep the PS4 since I have so much shit bought on my psn.
Hopefully gran turismo makes up for it....have a feeling it’s not tho. Forza has just gotten too awesome.
I do like ps4s layout compared to Xbox which seem cartoony and cheap.

I’ve got both. In terms of gameplay and graphics, there is not enough difference between them to notice when playing. If you aren’t taking advantage of online gaming, or if they don’t have friends that they are playing online with I would say it comes down to personal preference regarding the controller and the exclusive games. I prefer the menu layout and controller on Xbox.
As for the subscription services they both let you accomplish the same thing. With both you can game online and have access to some free games as long as your online subscription is current. I’m not sure what current pricing is for either, but IIRC they are very close if you purchase a 12 month subscription.
Whichever you choose, get the largest internal drive that you can.

most games are coming to both systems. So it’s all about the exclusives. Which of these do you like the most?
Gran Turismo
God of War
Ratchet and Clank
The Last Guardian
Street Fighter V
—————————
Forza
Halo
Gears of War
Killer Instinct
Sunset Overdrive
Which of those do you like the most? If you pick more from the top half = PS4. If you pick more from the bottom half = xbox one.

I have both. Use the Xbox 90% of the time because the non-gaming stuff is better. YouTube/Netflix/ESPN/HBOGO/etc just work better on it plus it has an ir blaster so it controls the TV and receiver volume and power. PS is relegated to exclusives or game series where I’m just used to playing them with the PS controller after the previous couple decades.

If you want to play with friends grab what they have. If not I would recommend the Xbox because I believe it has the better exclusive games. Forza is a must own and I personally feel Xbox live is a better and more reliable service compared to PlayStation Network.

We had to sort this out in May. We went PS4. Based on reviews it was deemed more robust and had a bit more life left in the platform compared to Xbox. What tipped it for us was price. We caught a deal that made it worth while.
My son and I play Star Wars Battlefront. It is not the most “awesome” shooter, but we have fun with it.
One thing I don’t like about the PS4 controllers stay on whenever the console is on. They don’t sleep when you watch things like Netflix. Eats into battery life.

There is a setting buried in the menus to set how long the controllers stay on for. I can’t remember if it’s in the power menu or the devices menu.

Xbox One. I use it as a media center and have it control my TV, Receiver, Cable box, etc. Went from having 4 remotes to having 1 (none, with voice controls considered).

Just bought the midgets a 2TB XBONE S. 4k compatible , UHD, and we already have a 360 so some games will carry over.

It’s my understanding that none of my PS3 games or controllers will carry over. Which is why I’m considering making the move to XB. I’ve got nothing to lose.

Halo 5 is the only real exclusive, and I think that game is terrible. Oh, and Forza 5 and 6. Everything else (Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon, ReCore) is also on PC which, to me, says PS4 is the better console to get if exclusives are your goal.

I always prefer the Playstation. 100%. Though I still will buy the Xbox 1 to go with my PS4 ‘cause why not both?

If you hold down the PS button on the controller it pulls up the quick menu. Go into the sound/devices menu and at the bottom you have the option to set time until controllers turn off. Below that you can turn the controller off at any time.

The ones that it will run retroactively are limited at this time, but it is a better option than none.
